The European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU) wrapped up its 68th Delegates Meeting, held at the Musée de la Brasserie, Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, France, on the 20th and 21st of October 2023. This critical assembly, attended by delegates from across Europe, including virtual participants, emphasized the union’s dedication to representing beer consumers with a unified voice.

A key focus of this year’s meeting was the commitment to fostering an environment of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) within the EBCU and the broader beer community. Delegates participated in a workshop aimed at understanding EDI issues and brainstormed ideas for a comprehensive EBCU Code of Conduct. This initiative reflects the union’s pledge to create a culture where all members feel valued and respected, and to set a standard for the industry and for beer consumers.

The delegates’ schedule was complemented by visits to local breweries and the Nancy beer festival, providing a firsthand look at the region’s beer heritage and contemporary brewing innovation. These experiences underscore the EBCU’s support for the diverse tapestry of European beer culture and its artisans.

Discussion topics during the meeting included the scrutiny of consumer attitudes towards beer labeling, the strategy for engaging with the European Parliament Elections in 2024, and the financial health of the EBCU. Moreover, the delegates deliberated on the future of the EBCU’s Brussels Reception and the value it provides in advocacy efforts.

One of the action points agreed upon was to develop an audit of member benefits across different organizations to enhance value and promote cross-border membership advantages. Delegates also discussed sponsorship strategies to widen participation and reduce financial constraints, highlighting the union’s proactive approach to resource management and community engagement.

The EBCU remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the quality, choice, and value for beer consumers. The 68th Delegates Meeting has laid down a progressive roadmap for the union’s activities and advocacy, ensuring that the voice of the beer consumer continues to resonate in the corridors of breweries and parliaments alike.
